Through a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), NUMTECH evaluated the environmental impact of an innovative eco-responsible district heating project.

Sustainability and responsibility are at the heart of NUMTECH’s expertise. That is why we supported DALKIA, EDF and SERFIM in their innovative sustainable construction project, launched as part of the Excellence Industrie consortium.

Together, we carried out a comparative Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) between a conventional construction site and an eco-responsible one, to identify key levers for making urban worksites more sustainable.

This pilot project, conducted in Villeurbanne (France), aimed to demonstrate that it is possible to sustainably transform practices in the public works sector while preserving resources and urban quality of life.

Thanks to this critically reviewed LCA, DALKIA, EDF and SERFIM, supported by the Lyon Metropolis, were able to obtain the first essential insights to drive the ecological and energy transition of construction sites. By using recycled and reused materials and exploring alternatives to fossil fuels, the consortium significantly reduced its environmental footprint, while also identifying areas for further improvement (notably the need to increase charging station density to better serve worksites).

SERFIM’s feedback on our collaboration:

"A construction site can be resource-efficient, in terms of energy, materials, and emissions, under conditions that remain economically viable for stakeholders (e.g. the value of a ton of carbon avoided). The LCA, carried out by NUMTECH, objectively and independently highlighted the benefits of alternatives to fossil fuels, including site electrification and the use of bio-based fuels."

Why conduct a Life Cycle Assessment?

A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a recognized method for evaluating the overall environmental footprint of a project.

Applied to an urban construction site, it makes it possible to measure impacts at every stage: from execution of works, to the machines and materials used, transportation, and even waste management and reduction.

Choosing an LCA means opting for a transparent, structured environmental assessment based on international standards. It provides objective data to compare different scenarios and guide decisions toward the most sustainable solutions.

Because it considers a wide range of indicators (greenhouse gas emissions, mineral and water consumption, etc.), the LCA provides a systemic and comprehensive view of the issues at stake.

At NUMTECH, we are convinced that every company has a key role to play in the fight against climate change. We put our expertise at the service of our clients to help them measure, understand and reduce their environmental impact.
